IMTECH TELECOM PARTNERS WITH MERU NETWORKS TO DELIVER THE LARGEST CAMPUS-WIDE WIRELESS NETWORK IN BELGIUM
Imtech Telecom is pioneering the use of campus wide Wi-fi in Belgium, by designing a mesh network infrastructure that supports wireless broadband access across Brussels’ Free University campus.
The project was funded by the BRIC (Brussels Regional Informatics Center) on behalf of the Ministry of the Brussels Region, which wanted to broaden the access to broadband across the entire campus of the Université Libre de Bruxelles/Vrije Universiteit Brussel.
The choice of partners in such a prestigious government project was crucial. As systems integrator for the project, Imtech Telecom designed the network.
After thorough evaluation, the company stipulated that a mesh network from Meru Networks, a global innovator in the all wireless enterprise would provide the most robust, resilient foundation
“We chose the Meru WBS solution as it fits best the campus area requirements and guarantees an opened technology for future implementations for the Brussels region,” added Damien Vico, Business Development manager at Imtech Telecom BE.
This pilot development is intended to prove the feasibility of seamless outdoor Wi-fi area and, when successful, will be the precursor to a number of more ambitious rollouts.
It’s an incredible achievement, considering the quality of service that needs to be offered. Meru’s fourth generation WLAN offers an astonishing array of applications, each of which has its own specific needs. At the same timeas providing free internet access over Wi-fi to everybody walking around the campus,

the network simultaneously caters for technical users throughout the University who require telefony services (VoWLAN), which is ambitious in an outdoor environment. Imtech Telecom’s mesh repeating scheme has enabled this service to extend over outdoor locations and the most remote areas of the campus. Imtech Telecom BE is now working on extending this scheme to other areas in Belgium and abroad.
Brussels’ Informatics Minister, Guy Vanhengel, enthused over the deployment: “This as a revolutionary step forward for the University. This impressive network is a fine example that other institutions will be able to emulate. To achieve such a sophisticated solution, at such significant cost savings, is remarkable.”
