IMTECH TELECOM & CIENA BUILD NEW 10GE RESEARCH & EDUCATION NETWORK FOR SUNET
To meet the unique bandwidth requirements of the research and education community, Imtech Telecom and Ciena® Corporation have teamed to build a customised, high-performance network for the Swedish University Computer Network (SUNET).
The new 10-Gigabit Ethernet network, OptoSUNET, has been in operation since March and replaces a leased network, providing SUNET with greater scalability, reliability and high-capacity connectivity.

Built on Ciena’s FlexSelect™ Architecture, OptoSUNET interconnects 32 universities across Sweden map_col1.jpg, 32 kB
to support bandwidth-intensive research and collaboration. A robust and flexible network, it enables universities to optimise bandwidth usage and share the workload of research projects and simulations that require tremendous processing power and speed.

The new, fiber-based network is fully redundant with two independent optical links connecting Stockholm to each major city, giving universities up to 80 channels with 10 Gbps per channel capacity and scalability to 40 Gbps per channel – for a total of 3.2 Tbps of capacity – as demand grows.

OptoSUNET is also the first research and education network in
Scandinavia based on Wavelength Division Multiplexing (WDM) technology.

As the main contractor and systems integrator, Imtech Telecom deployed the new network as a turnkey solution in just under a year. The 12-year contract is worth approximately 50M Euro, including maintenance.

The OptoSUNET deployment builds on Imtech and Ciena’s success in building customised research and education networks around the globe. In Europe, Ciena’s technology is also utilised in JANET, RENATER and the London Metropolitan Network.

“Ciena’s FlexSelect Architecture also gives SUNET a high-performance solution with the scalability and service flexibility required to share critical resources throughout the university network. The new network will also reduce operational costs while allowing us to scale to 40Gps and beyond as our research requirements evolve. guillements.gif, 0 kB
